Senate to pass Brown cuts, GOP closer

While the governor said Monday he does not have the Republican votes necessary to ask voters to extend temporary tax increases on vehicles, income and sales – a central part of his budget proposal – Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg is riding to the rescue.
Steinberg said Tuesday afternoon the Senate will vote Thursday to pass spending reductions in Brown’s budget plan, minus Republican support for tax extensions. “We’re prepared to pass cuts. …If the Assembly passes them as well, they get send to the governor, and I assume he will sign it.
Not confident that he will reach his Thursday budget deadline, Brown said there was some momentum, not as much as I want, but it’s there. But five Republican senators said Monday they were at an impasse but planned to meet again with Brown yesterday “out of a mutual desire to keep the conversion moving forward.”
Obsession
Peter King (R-NY.), chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, is determined, despite very strong opposition, to launch hearings starting this week on the supposed radicalization of American Muslims. Democrats on the committee plan to call L.A. County Sheriff Lee Baca who has often said that American Muslims have been crucial in helping terrorism investigations. Baca, who proudly refers to himself as an international sheriff, has made several private trips to the Middle East, including Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Dubai and Qatar, to monitor the situation. His comments may be revealing.
Quotable
Greeting President Obama in his visit to Boston yesterday was an Op-Ed in the Boston Globe by Sen. Scott Brown: “There is a D next to your name and an R next to mine. And while we don’t often agree, I hope we can work together to support pro-growth policies that will put people back to work and make the hard choices necessary to lead our country toward a fiscally responsible path so we can again lead the world.”
