Christine O’Donnell Is No Witch

THE surprise Republican Senate nominee of Delaware has made a number of bizarre claims in recent years which have turned her into a national joke over such issues as masturbation, witchcraft and, yes, evolution. The Associated Press, in a delicious tidbit, has uncovered a 2006 U. S. Senate debate claim made by O’Donnell in her unsuccessful run that China was planning to take over the U.S., claiming she had confidential information that she couldn’t divulge.

To stop the hemorrhaging, O’Donnell has hired Fred Davis, a Republican ad wizard, for an instant makeover.  Her debut general election ad, a 30-second spot, begins airing today. Her first words are: “I’m not a witch,” looking into the camera, and adds “I’m nothing you’ve heard. I’m you.”

Wearing a black blazer and pearls the Tea Party favorite continues: “None of us is perfect. Nothing of us can be happy with what we see all around us.” The ad ends with O’Donnell repeating her message: “I’m you.” Savvy Garden State voters may find such an enigmatic association difficult to comprehend.

California Election 2010

In the first poll conducted since Meg Whitman faced accusations from her former housekeeper and a debate on Univision, a Rasmussen Reports survey shows Gov. Jerry Brown picking up 49% of the vote while Whitman draws 44%. Two weeks ago, the candidates were virtually tied. There’s reason to believe Brown’s powerful rebuttal to Whitman’s attack may indicate the margin is much larger. Rasmussen Reports has moved the race from leans Toss-Up to Leans Democratic.

President Obama and his wife, Michelle, will make separate, back-to-back appearances in California to boost the state Democratic ticket. The president, here Oct. 21, will do a San Francisco fundraiser for Brown and another for the Democratic National Committee. The first lady arrives Oct. 25 for a Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee fundraiser in S.F. for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi before heading to L.A, where she will campaign for Sen. Barbara Boxer.

Being Glenn Beck

He is fragile, on the edge. There is no template for him or for where he is headed. “I have not prepared my whole life to be here. I prepared my whole life to be in a back alley.” Mark Leibovich, in a revealing New York Times cover story, wrote he expected Beck to cry, but he did not.
