GOP Panics; Christie Not Running

Bill Kristol, editor of the Weekly Standard and a leading movement conservative, suggested after Thursday’s GOP debate in Orlando that 70 percent of the activists in attendance cast a vote of no confidence on the two frontrunners for the nomination – Rick Perry and Mitt Romney. Herman Cain, he believes, merits a closer look, together with Ron Paul and Rick Santorum,
Kristol believes Chris Christie, the governor of New Jersey, is the perfect candidate to shake up the race as several millionaires bond to recruit him. One mega Christie backer has been Fox News CEO Roger Ailes who begged him to run even before the presidential race got underway.
A Christie spokesman shot down speculation the governor would enter the race. Back in April Christie told ABC’s Diane Sawyer he did “not feel ready in his heart to be president. But Kristol said that a lot of attention will be paid to Christie’s Reagan Library speech Tuesday in Simi Valley. But don’t bet the ranch!
What They Said
“Gov. Jerry Brown is doing well in the polls right now, but he’s got a problem in the works that could really take him down…the state is on track to run out of money by Thanksgiving. It turns out that the budget Brown signed had revenue projections that were…well, I don’t want to call them phony, but let’s just say they’ve turned out to be several billion dollars short of accurate.” – Former ic Assembly Speaker Willie Brown, San Francisco Chronicle
“Mr. President. I don’t have job. But that is because I have been lucky enough to live in the Silicon Valley for a while and work for a small company down the street and did quite well. So, I am unemployed by choice. My question is – would you please raise my taxes?” – Doug Edwards, former director of communications and marketing at Google, asking the question of Obama at a Linkedin Town Hall event in Mountain View, Calif. on Monday
“If I’m off the mark, and Perry’s lead over Romney holds after the Texan’s week of woe, Romney is in deep trouble, facing an implacable wall of resistance – and Democrats may yet receive an answered prayer in the form of Perry as the GOP’s ‘best man’ to run against.’ – Democratic strategist Bob Shrum, The Week.
“While Woody Allen may be right that 80 percent of success is showing up, if that’s now the high bar for functioning government, America can pack it in.” – Frank Rich, New York Magazine
