Grover Norquist: Unelected GOP Rep

Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), a member of the deficit supercommittee, echoing a broad segment of support in polls by both Democrats and a strong segment of Republicans, suggested a major obstacle to progress was Grover Norquist and his anti-tax pledge.

Murray told CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday that one of the problems with the pledge was that too many Republicans bought into lobbyist Norquist “whose name has come up in meetings time and time again.” His Americans for Tax Reform sponsors a “Taxpayers Protection Pledge” that asks candidates for elected office to oppose any tax increases and the elimination of tax deductions unless it is revenue neutral. “As long as we have some Republican lawmakers who feel more enthralled with a pledge they took to a Republican lobbyist than they do to a pledge to the country to solve problems, this is going to be part to do.”

“Lazy’ ad

Rick Perry has a disturbing tendency to shoot too often from the hip when he’s not having a mental debate relapse or suggesting Texas secede from the union. Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly, to his credit, on Friday night pushed Perry on his ad, questioning the candidate about whether the spot—which takes out of context a line President Obama made about selling America overseas as a good place to do business—is “fair.”
Perry insisted, “Yeah it’s a fair ad absolutely,” even after O’Reilly played Obama’s entire comments, in which the president was referring to the government and business sector not Americans. Perry persisted in his belief. “I think he’s taking about Americans.” “Do you really?” O’Reilly asked, “Is that what you took away from that?”

Quotable

“The next president of the United States will present to you tonight”—Family Leader Bob Vander Plaats at a social conservatives values forum Saturday in Iowa—and never a fan of an absent Mitt Romney—said he was “dissing” the conservative base and predicted it would cost him the Republican nomination.
