Outing Rush

Sunday’s New York Times Magazine reveals a candid Limbaugh, most of whose broadcasts emanate from a radio studio in a Palm Beach, Fla., which he calls the Southern Command, and describes on the air as a “heavily fortified bunker.”

Zev Cafets, a frequent contributor, got him to discuss his substance abuse and self-described role in Republican Party politics as “America’s Anchorman,” one of the nation’s most admired and reviled figures.

About McCain: He called him a phony conservative and apostate Reaganite before it appeared he would be the nominee but has never met or spoken with him. His failings – too old, too opportunistic, too liberal.

But he’ll vote for McCain because, like the Super Bowl, “if your team isn’t in it, you root for the team you hate less” - hardly an endorsement.

Suggesting the GOP has abandoned conservatives, he says McCain doesn’t want to criticize Democrats; he wants Democrats to vote for him.”

“Obama’s a liberal. I oppose liberals. That’s all that’s involved here.” He hailed his “Operation Chaos” radio campaign, encouraging Republicans to vote for Hillary Clinton, slow Obama and prolong the liberal battle.

Limbaugh says he’ll come up with something new to mess with the Democratic convention and the general election.

He’s already picked his candidate for the Republican Restoration: Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, 37 – viewed as a genuine movement conservative in the Ronald Reagan mold.

Quote of the Day

*** “I am proud of the decision of this administration to overthrow Saddam Hussein,” Condoleezza Rice, Bush’s national security adviser at the time of the March 2003 invasion, tells Bloomberg Television this weekend. “The Iraq war has been tougher than any of us really dreamed.” What a surprise!
