Religion Aside, Vatican Ambassadors Back Mitt

Mitt Romney’s Mormon faith doesn’t concern five former Catholic ambassadors to the Vatican who endorsed him for President, Forbes reported in a little noticed story on Saturday. The ambassadors—most notably conservative scholar Mary Ann Glendon—said in a joint statement they support Romney “because of his commitment to and support of the values that we feel are critical in a national leader. In a statement posted on Romney’s campaign website. “Although our political afflictions are diverse, we recognize the importance of family and traditional values in American life.” In 2008, right wing evangelicals warned Presidential candidate John McCain against choosing Romney as his running mate because of his religious background. At the time Romney was being pushed by Karl Rove, Fox News host Sean Hannity and many influential Republican voices. McCain predictably endorsed Romney last week.
