Sarah Palin on Marijuana

The former Alaska governor seems unfazed about the use of pot. She’s not for legalization but Mama Grizzly sounded very much like a libertarian recently on the Fox Biz Network:

“If somebody’s gonna smoke a joint in their house and not do anybody any harm, then perhaps there are other things our cops should be looking at to engage in and try to clean up some other problems we have in our society.” The fuzz should “not concentrate on such a, relatively speaking; minimal problem will have in the country.”

It may be no biggie for Palin but probably the hottest issue on the November 2, 2010 California ballot will be a Marijuana Legalization Initiative which would change state law, legalize marijuana and allow it to be regulated and taxed.

The Associated Press reported that “full legalization legalization could turn medical marijuana dispensaries into all-purpose pot stores, and the open sale of joints could become commonplace on mom-and-pop liquor store counters in liberal locales like Oakland and Santa Cruz.

One of the major arguments proponents make is that it would increase tax revenues in a state that is in dire need of additional revenues,  but opposition from the law enforcement establishment and the health professions will be intense.

A Field Poll in April 2009 indicated that 56%of Californians support legalizing marijuana. But a poll last month by the Public Policy Institute of California showed voters more evenly divided – 49% in favor, 48% opposed and 3% undecided.
