Edwards and Hypocrisy

“I think this President has shown a remarkable disrespect for his office, for the dimensions of leadership, for his friends, for his wife, for his precious daughter. It is breathtaking to me the level to which that disrespect has risen.’ – John Edwards, about Bill Clinton, 1999.

“Over the course of several campaigns, I started to believe that I was special and become increasingly egocentric and narcissistic.” – A lying John Edwards admitting Friday he had an affair with a woman in 2006 who was not his wife and has inoperative cancer – before confessing to her and then having the gall to announce his run for president on Dec. 27 of that year.

“You can’t lie in politics and expect to have people’s confidence.” - Former Rep. David Bonior, who managed Edwards’s campaign, said the candidate “betrayed” those who believed in him and is finished in politics.

“When it comes to politicians and sex, our expectations are not all that great...But you really think that by now they’d know how to make a decent public confession.” - NYT columnist Gail Collins on “Ken Doll In Lust.”
