Voters believe while Obama is best able to handle most major issues, immigration is among issues on which voters give McCain a slight edge.

A Pew Research Center poll found Obama with double-digit leads on social issues, health care, economy and energy problems.

McCain had five-point leads on immigration and taxes, while his 3% advantage over Obama on Iraq was within the margin of error.

Latino vote

Both candidates in recent days have been speaking to this pivotal constituency. Bush got 40% in 2004, up from 35% in 2000. In 2006, when Democrats took control of Congress, Republicans campaigned against immigration reform – and the GOP got just 30% of the vote.

The latest NBC/Wall Street Journal poll has terrible news for McCain. Among Latinos, Obama beats him by a 62%-28% margin.

Operation Chaos

Rush Limbaugh, on air Tuesday, alluded to bizarre conspiracy rumors that Clinton campaign chairman Terry McAuliffe and key Clinton supporters may be plotting to deprive Obama of the nomination. He’s excited about reviving a new version of his primary stunt to encourage his legions to stiff Obama again – but do no favors for the Clintons.

Quote of the Day

* “I think the depressingly self-absorbed McCain campaign machine needs to get out of the way. They need to just let McCain be McCain.” Mike Murphy, McCain’s strategist in the 2000 presidential campaign, friend and longtime adviser reacting to the candidate’s teleprompter problems. Murphy will not join the campaign, reportedly because of past differences with Steve Schmidt, McCain’s new senior adviser who worked closely with Karl Rove in 2004.
